Tesla briefly joined the $1 trillion market-cap club in October 2021 after its share price surged.
Tesla’s valuation passed $1 trillion on October 25, 2021, after the car-rental company Hertz announced an order for 100,000 Tesla vehicles. The announcement intensified investor enthusiasm and pushed Tesla’s share price higher.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and became closely associated with battery-powered electric vehicles, software features, and direct-to-consumer sales. Its Model 3 helped expand the company beyond the luxury-car market and became a major volume product.
Market capitalization measures what investors value the company’s equity at, not the number of vehicles it produces or its physical assets. Tesla’s market value could therefore move sharply even when its production capacity changed more gradually.
