Apple briefly became the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization on January 3, 2022.
The milestone occurred when Apple’s share price rose high enough for the combined market value of its outstanding shares to touch $3 trillion during trading. Because stock prices change continuously, the company’s valuation later moved below that level before crossing it again at later points.
Apple’s path to the milestone was built on several businesses rather than the iPhone alone. The company sells Macs, iPads, Apple Watches and AirPods, while its services division includes the App Store, advertising, cloud services and subscriptions.
This was a market-value milestone, not a measure of physical assets or money held by Apple. It also did not permanently establish Apple as the largest company at every moment: rankings can change with share prices, exchange rates and the performance of rival companies.
