Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization in June 2024 after surpassing Microsoft and Apple.
The shift followed an extraordinary rise in demand for Nvidia’s data-center GPUs and related networking products. Technology companies and cloud providers were investing heavily in computing infrastructure for generative artificial intelligence, and Nvidia held a leading position in that market.
Nvidia’s lead demonstrated how quickly market-capitalization rankings can change. Apple and Microsoft had occupied the top position repeatedly, but investors revalued Nvidia as expected AI spending expanded. The ranking was based on public share prices and could therefore change again with daily trading.
Nvidia’s business also includes software tools and systems that help developers use its hardware. This broader platform strategy helped distinguish it from a company selling only individual semiconductor components.
