Apple became the first U.S. firm to close a trading day above a $1 trillion market capitalization in August 2018.
Apple reached that milestone on August 2, 2018, when its share price and outstanding share count placed its equity value above the trillion-dollar threshold. The achievement reflected the enormous scale of the iPhone business, along with growing services revenue from products such as the App Store and iCloud.
The milestone is sometimes described as Apple becoming the first company in the world to reach $1 trillion, but that wording depends on the measurement used. PetroChina briefly reached an intraday valuation near $1 trillion in 2007, while Apple was the first U.S. company to close above the level. Market capitalization also changes constantly with share prices, so it is not the same as revenue, profit, or the total value of all company assets.
Apple later passed additional market-cap milestones, including $2 trillion in 2020 and $3 trillion in 2022. Those figures were reached through changing share prices and share-count adjustments, including stock splits.
