Nvidia became the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization after its shares surged in June 2024.
Nvidia designs graphics-processing units and related software used in gaming, scientific computing, and artificial-intelligence systems. Demand for its data-center accelerators made the company a central supplier during the rapid expansion of generative AI, sending its share price sharply higher.
On June 5, 2024, Nvidia's market capitalization surpassed $3 trillion during trading, and the company briefly ranked above Apple by market value. A ten-for-one stock split took effect shortly afterward; a stock split changes the number and price of shares but does not, by itself, change total market capitalization.
Nvidia began in 1993 and was initially associated especially with computer graphics. Its later importance in AI computing transformed its position among the world's most valuable public companies.
