Apple became the first United States company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2018.
Apple crossed the milestone on August 2, 2018, when its shares rose following a strong quarterly report and optimistic investor expectations. Because market capitalization equals share price multiplied by shares outstanding, the company’s valuation reflected the combined market value of all Apple shares.
Apple had grown from a personal-computer maker into a diversified technology company centered on the iPhone, while also expanding services, wearables, tablets, and computers. Its large customer base and integrated ecosystem helped investors assign a valuation unmatched by any earlier U.S. public company.
The wording is sometimes shortened to “the first trillion-dollar company,” but the exact claim is a stock-market milestone, not a statement that Apple had $1 trillion in cash. PetroChina had briefly reached a nominal $1 trillion valuation in 2007 before Apple’s more enduring record.
