Apple became the first publicly traded firm valued at $3 trillion at market close.
Apple reached the milestone on January 3, 2022, when its share price briefly lifted its market capitalization above $3 trillion during trading and then finished just above that level. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company’s share price by its outstanding shares.
The achievement reflected investor expectations about Apple’s iPhone ecosystem, services business, custom silicon, and enormous global customer base. It did not mean Apple had $3 trillion in cash or that the company had sold $3 trillion of products.
Apple’s market value later moved below and above the threshold as its share price changed. The milestone is therefore a historical market-cap record, not a permanent ranking. Microsoft was another early member of the $3 trillion group, but Apple reached the closing-value milestone first.
