Apple became the first publicly traded company to exceed a $2 trillion market value in 2020.
Apple crossed the $2 trillion threshold during trading on August 19, 2020. The milestone followed a strong rise in the company’s share price, supported by demand for iPhones and services, investor confidence in its product ecosystem and a broader surge in technology stocks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The achievement came about two years after Apple became the first company to reach $1 trillion. Saudi Aramco also reached a $2 trillion valuation in 2019, but Apple’s 2020 milestone is commonly described as the first by a publicly traded company based in the United States and the first to achieve the record through U.S. stock-market trading.
Apple later reached $3 trillion in 2022. These figures measure market capitalization, not annual sales, profits or the amount of cash held by the company.
