Apple became the first publicly traded company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization at the end of a trading day.
Apple’s shares closed above the level on August 2, 2018, making the milestone more than an intraday market event. The closing price is often emphasized because it represents the valuation at the official end of the regular trading session.
Apple’s growth had been transformed by the iPhone, introduced in 2007. The company also benefited from the iPad, Mac, App Store, and a large accessories and services business. Strong customer loyalty and an integrated hardware-and-software ecosystem helped support its valuation.
Intraday and closing market-cap records are different. A company can briefly cross a threshold during trading and finish below it. Apple’s close above $1 trillion therefore became a particularly clear benchmark in the history of public-company valuations.
