Tesla became the first automaker valued at more than $1 trillion on the stock market.
Tesla reached the milestone on October 25, 2021, after its shares climbed following news of a major vehicle order from Hertz. The rise pushed Tesla’s market capitalization above $1 trillion, making it the first car manufacturer to reach that level.
Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations about future electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, software, and possible expansion into energy products. At the time, its market value was substantially higher than that of traditional manufacturers producing many more vehicles each year.
Market capitalization is not the same as annual sales, production, or profit. Tesla’s milestone therefore did not mean it was the largest automaker by vehicle output. It showed how investors were pricing expected future growth in electric vehicles and related technologies.
