Which company acquired GitHub in 2018?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018, completing the deal for $7.5 billion in an all-stock transaction.

GitHub, founded in 2008, had become a major platform for hosting Git repositories, collaborating on software, and managing open-source projects. Microsoft was already a major GitHub user, hosting projects such as .NET Core, PowerShell, Visual Studio Code, and much of its documentation there.

Microsoft announced the acquisition on June 4, 2018, and the deal closed on October 26. GitHub continued operating as a separate platform and community rather than being absorbed into a Microsoft-branded service. That independence was important because many developers worried that Microsoft ownership might change GitHub's culture or access.

A common mix-up is confusing GitHub with Git, the version-control software. Git was created by Linus Torvalds; GitHub is a web-based hosting and collaboration service built around Git. Microsoft owns GitHub, but it does not own Git itself.
