Burgundy was the color Coco Chanel famously used for the interior of many handbags.
Chanel’s handbag interiors were often burgundy, a detail associated with the house’s design language. The color has been linked to Chanel’s childhood memories of the uniforms worn at the Aubazine convent, where she spent part of her youth.
The choice was practical as well as symbolic. A dark reddish lining made the inside of a bag visually distinctive and helped reduce the appearance of everyday marks. Chanel handbags also became known for other recurring details, including quilted leather, chain straps, and carefully organized compartments.
Burgundy should not be confused with the black exterior used on many iconic Chanel bags. The question concerns the interior lining, not the dominant exterior color of every Chanel design.
