“Yellow” was Coldplay's first UK top-10 hit. Released in 2000, the song reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and transformed the band from a promising alternative-rock act into a major international name.
The single was the second UK release from Coldplay's debut album, Parachutes, following “Shiver.” Although “Shiver” had already reached the UK top 40, peaking at number 35, “Yellow” broke through to the top 10 and eventually the top five. Its success also helped Parachutes reach number one on the UK Albums Chart.
Coldplay recorded the song with producer Ken Nelson, and the lineup on the recording featured Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. The song's slow-building guitar sound, memorable melody, and unusual title became central to the band's early identity. It is sometimes mistaken for the band's first UK hit overall, but “Shiver” came first; “Yellow” was the first to reach the top 10.
