Released in 2002, A Rush of Blood to the Head was Coldplay’s second studio album, following Parachutes. “The Scientist” became one of its signature tracks, alongside “In My Place,” “Clocks” and “God Put a Smile upon Your Face.” It was released as a single in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2002 and later in the United States.

The song grew from Chris Martin’s attempt to play George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity” on an out-of-tune piano during recording sessions in Liverpool. He could not reproduce Harrison’s song, but discovered the piano progression that became “The Scientist.” The finished track is a restrained, piano-led ballad about love, regret and emotional powerlessness.

The song’s reverse-motion music video is another reason it is memorable. Directed by Jamie Thraves, it required Martin to learn to sing the lyrics backward so the reversed footage would appear synchronized. The video won three MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.
