Released in 2002, A Rush of Blood to the Head was Coldplay’s second studio album, following their breakthrough debut Parachutes. It was produced by the band with Ken Nelson and expanded their sound through prominent piano, electric guitar and more ambitious arrangements. The album includes several of Coldplay’s best-known songs, including “In My Place,” “The Scientist,” “God Put a Smile upon Your Face” and “Warning Sign.”

“Clocks” nearly missed the record. Chris Martin developed its distinctive piano riff late in the recording process, initially placing a demo on a disc labelled “Songs for #3,” because the band thought it might belong on their next album. Manager Phil Harvey urged them to finish it, and the track was added to the completed record.

The song became one of Coldplay’s signature recordings. Its hypnotic piano pattern and urgent lyrics helped it win the 2004 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The album itself reached number one in 12 countries and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
