Which co-creator made How I Met Your Mother with Craig Thomas?

The story behind the answer

Carter Bays made How I Met Your Mother with Craig Thomas. The two creators developed the sitcom for CBS and drew heavily on their own friendship and experiences living in New York City.

Bays and Thomas had previously worked as writers for Late Show with David Letterman. Their idea was to write about friends, dating, and the absurd situations they encountered in New York. Those experiences helped shape the show's central group: Ted, Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin.

The series premiered on September 19, 2005, and ran for nine seasons, ending on March 31, 2014. Bays and Thomas also helped guide its distinctive storytelling structure, in which an older Ted narrates events from the past while trying to explain how he met the mother of his children.

A common mix-up is confusing the creators with other prominent sitcom writers. Greg Daniels worked on shows including The Office, Bill Prady co-created The Big Bang Theory, and Chuck Lorre created or co-created several major sitcoms. None of them co-created How I Met Your Mother.
