Newcastle United played Liverpool at St James' Park on the opening Sunday of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The match was scheduled for Sunday 23 August 2026 at 16:30 BST. It was the final fixture of the Sunday programme and one of the most prominent games in the opening round.
St James’ Park is Newcastle United’s historic home in central Newcastle upon Tyne. Liverpool travelled north for the fixture, which paired two clubs with long Premier League histories and large national followings.
The other Sunday games were Brighton & Hove Albion versus Aston Villa and Manchester City versus AFC Bournemouth. The Newcastle–Liverpool match was the only Sunday fixture scheduled for the late 16:30 slot.
