Which club did Everton beat 2–0 in its first match of the 2026–27 Premier League season?

The story behind the answer

Everton beat Crystal Palace 2–0 in its first match of the 2026–27 Premier League season.

The match was played at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 22 August 2026. Everton scored once on either side of half-time, defeating Crystal Palace without conceding and beginning the campaign with three points.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall opened the scoring, while Thierno Barry added the second goal after the interval. The victory was Everton’s first opening-match win in five years and ended a run of eight top-flight matches without a victory.

The match also marked the beginning of Pierre Sage’s reign as Crystal Palace manager. Palace’s afternoon became more difficult when defender Chadi Riad was carried off with an apparent knee injury. The result should not be confused with Brentford’s 3–0 win over Tottenham or Brighton’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa, two other home victories recorded on the same opening weekend.
