Which climate zone is characterized by monsoon winds causing heavy seasonal rain?

The story behind the answer

The climate zone characterized by monsoon winds causing heavy seasonal rain is the tropical monsoon climate.

In the Köppen system, tropical monsoon climate is coded Am. Temperatures remain above 18°C in every month, but rainfall is strongly seasonal. A summer or high-sun-season monsoon brings moist air inland, often producing intense thunderstorms and very heavy rain, while the opposite season is drier as winds reverse or weaken.

Tropical monsoon climate is an intermediate category between tropical rainforest climate, Af, and tropical savanna climate, Aw. Its dry season is real but generally less severe than in a savanna climate, and its wet season can be exceptionally concentrated. The word “monsoon” refers to the seasonal reversal of atmospheric circulation, not simply to a single rainstorm or a permanently rainy climate. South and Southeast Asia contain many well-known examples, along with areas of West Africa, northern Australia, and the Americas.
