Which Claude Monet painting was rejected by the Paris Salon in 1867 after he submitted it?
Answer
Women in the Garden
Answer
Women in the Garden
Claude Monet’s Women in the Garden was rejected by the Paris Salon in 1867.
Monet painted the large outdoor composition in the garden of a property at Ville-d’Avray. It depicts women in fashionable clothing beneath trees, with sunlight breaking across the foliage and figures. Camille Doncieux, Monet’s companion and future wife, modeled for several of the figures.
The painting’s scale and demanding outdoor execution reflected Monet’s ambition, but the Salon jury did not accept it. Its rejection contributed to the financial difficulties Monet faced during the 1860s.
Women in the Garden is not the same work as Camille, which the Salon accepted in 1866. That earlier success is a frequent source of confusion when discussing Monet’s early Salon submissions.
