Answer
Murder on the Orient Express
Which classic mystery novel features a murder on the Orient Express? Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie, is the canonical answer. The 1934 novel stars Christie's Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, whose journey home is interrupted when a passenger is found murdered aboard a train trapped by heavy snow.
The story begins in Istanbul and moves through what was then Yugoslavia, with the train stranded between Vinkovci and Brod, now in northeastern Croatia. Its confined setting turns the passenger list into a closed circle of suspects, a structure that became one of the classic forms of detective fiction.
Christie's own travels helped inspire the novel. She rode the Orient Express in 1928, and a 1929 snowstorm delayed the real train near Çerkezköy in Turkey. The plot's child-kidnapping background also echoes the widely publicized 1932 Lindbergh kidnapping.
Readers sometimes confuse this book with Christie's The Mystery of the Blue Train or Death on the Nile, which also feature Poirot. The American first edition used the alternate title Murder in the Calais Coach.
