Auckland’s Sky Tower is a launch point for New Year’s Eve fireworks in New Zealand.
The Sky Tower is a telecommunications and observation tower in central Auckland. At 328 metres, it is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Its height makes it a highly visible landmark across the city and an effective platform for a midnight fireworks display.
New Zealand reaches January 1 earlier than many heavily populated parts of the world because it lies near the International Date Line. Auckland’s celebration therefore becomes one of the prominent internationally televised New Year events, although other Pacific locations welcome the new year earlier still.
The Sky Tower opened in 1997 and is part of the SkyCity Auckland complex. It contains observation decks, restaurants, and an illuminated mast. The display is sometimes described simply as Auckland fireworks, but the landmark associated with the launch is the Sky Tower—not Auckland Harbour Bridge, which is a separate structure nearby.
