Edinburgh’s New Year’s Eve celebration features the annual Hogmanay Street Party on Princes Street.
The street party is part of Edinburgh’s broader Hogmanay programme, which turns the city centre into a large public celebration around the end of December. Princes Street, one of Edinburgh’s principal streets, provides a striking setting because of its views toward Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town skyline.
The programme has included live music, entertainment, fireworks and large crowds, although its exact format can change between years. Hogmanay itself is the Scottish New Year celebration, and Edinburgh is internationally associated with organized public events under that name.
This street party is different from the Torchlight Procession, which is a separate event in the same festival period. It is also different from the traditional private custom of first-footing. Naming Edinburgh is essential because other Scottish cities hold their own New Year events, but the Princes Street celebration belongs to Edinburgh’s Hogmanay programme.
