Which city’s Great National Assembly Square hosts Moldova’s largest Independence Day ceremonies?

The story behind the answer

Chișinău’s Great National Assembly Square hosts Moldova’s largest Independence Day ceremonies.

Moldova celebrates Independence Day on 27 August, commemorating the declaration adopted by the Moldovan parliament in 1991. The Great National Assembly Square, known in Romanian as Piața Marii Adunări Naționale, is the country’s main civic space and lies in the centre of the capital, Chișinău.

The square became especially important during Moldova’s national revival movement in the late Soviet period. Large demonstrations there helped make it a symbol of public political participation. Since independence, it has hosted speeches, concerts, official ceremonies, and other national celebrations.

Chișinău is Moldova’s capital and largest city. Tiraspol is the seat of the unrecognized Transnistrian administration, but it is not the venue for Moldova’s national Independence Day ceremonies. The square’s name also recalls the mass assemblies held there, so it is more specific than simply answering “Chișinău.”
