Which city’s exchange gave the 1873 Panic its alternate name, the Gründerkrach?

The story behind the answer

Vienna’s exchange gave the 1873 Panic its alternate name, the Gründerkrach.

The German term Gründerkrach means roughly “founders’ crash” and refers especially to the market collapse that began in Vienna on May 9, 1873. The panic followed a period of rapid company formation, credit expansion, and speculative investment after the Austro-Prussian War.

Financial stress was not limited to Austria-Hungary. The crisis spread to Germany and then to the United States, where the failure of the banking firm Jay Cooke & Company contributed to a suspension of trading on the New York Stock Exchange in September 1873.

The resulting downturn is often associated with the Long Depression, although historians debate its precise boundaries and severity. Falling prices, banking failures, industrial weakness, and reduced investment affected multiple countries for years. Vienna’s crash was therefore both a local exchange shock and an early stage of a wider international financial crisis.
