Which city was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?

The story behind the answer

Salzburg was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Mozart was born in Salzburg on 27 January 1756, when the city was part of the independent Archbishopric of Salzburg in the Holy Roman Empire. His father, Leopold Mozart, was a composer and musician employed at the Salzburg court.

The family’s home at Getreidegasse 9, now known as Mozart’s Birthplace, is preserved as a museum. Mozart began performing publicly as a child and toured European courts with his sister Nannerl.

Mozart later spent important years in Vienna, where he worked as a composer and performer and died in 1791. Vienna is therefore strongly associated with his career, but it was not his birthplace. Salzburg’s annual festival also celebrates the city’s connection with his music.
