Which city is the U.S. Supreme Court building located in?
Answer
Washington, D.C.
Answer
Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Supreme Court building is located in Washington, D.C.
The building stands at 1 First Street, Northeast, directly across from the U.S. Capitol and near the Library of Congress. It is the Court’s permanent home and houses the courtroom, justices’ chambers, conference spaces, offices, and a law library.
The Court did not always have its own building. It first met in New York City in 1790, then moved with the federal government to Philadelphia. After the capital moved to Washington in 1800, the justices worked in several rooms inside the Capitol, including the Old Supreme Court Chamber and the Old Senate Chamber.
Construction of a dedicated Supreme Court Building began in 1932 and was completed in 1935. Architect Cass Gilbert designed the neoclassical structure, whose marble exterior and monumental sculptures were intended to express the judiciary’s status as an independent branch of government.
Philadelphia and New York are common distractions because the Court met in both cities early in its history. Boston, however, was never the Court’s permanent national home.
