Paris is the headquarters city of the International Energy Agency.
The IEA is an autonomous intergovernmental organization created in 1974 after the global oil crisis. Its Paris location reflects its institutional relationship with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, whose headquarters are also in the French capital. The agency’s listed address is 9 rue de la Fédération, Paris, France.
The IEA originally operated from the Château de la Muette, the OECD’s headquarters. In 1996, it moved to commercially leased premises within the Embassy of Australia in Paris. Although the agency works globally on oil, gas, electricity, energy efficiency and clean-energy technology, its administrative headquarters remain in Paris.
Common mix-ups arise because several major international energy organizations are based elsewhere. OPEC is headquartered in Vienna, while many United Nations bodies are based in New York, and London has historically been associated with major oil companies and energy institutions. None of those locations is the IEA headquarters.
