Which city is known as the world's northernmost national capital?

The story behind the answer

Reykjavík is the world’s northernmost national capital city.

The capital of Iceland lies in the southwest of the country at about 64 degrees north latitude, on the southern shore of Faxaflói Bay. Iceland’s national government, parliament, and major cultural institutions are based there, and the city forms the core of the country’s largest urban area.

The name Reykjavík means “Smoky Bay,” referring to steam rising from geothermal areas observed by the settlement’s first recorded Norse settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, according to medieval tradition. Iceland’s Alþingi, or parliament, was established at Þingvellir in 930 and moved to Reykjavík in the nineteenth century. Reykjavik is often confused with the northernmost large city, Murmansk, but Murmansk is not a national capital; it is a Russian regional city.
