Which city is known as the historic centre of the Mali Empire and a major centre of Islamic learning?

The story behind the answer

Timbuktu is the historic city associated with the Mali Empire and a major centre of Islamic learning.

Located near the southern edge of the Sahara in present-day Mali, Timbuktu grew prosperous through trans-Saharan trade. Its position near the Niger River floodplain connected desert caravans with West African markets, especially during the medieval period.

The city flourished under the Mali Empire and later the Songhai Empire. The Sankore University tradition and libraries made Timbuktu famous for scholarship in law, theology, grammar and astronomy. Manuscripts preserved in private collections document centuries of West African intellectual life.

Timbuktu’s celebrated buildings include the Djinguereber Mosque, Sidi Yahya Mosque and Sankore Mosque. They are associated with the distinctive earthen architecture of the region. Timbuktu is sometimes portrayed as an unreachable mythical place, but it was a real, influential urban and scholarly centre.
