Which city is home to the Motown museum Hitsville U.S.A.?

The story behind the answer

The city home to the Motown museum, Hitsville U.S.A., is Detroit.

Hitsville U.S.A. was Motown’s first headquarters and recording studio at 2648 West Grand Boulevard. Berry Gordy bought the property in 1959 and converted a former photography studio into the compact Studio A, where many foundational Motown recordings were made.

The site became the Motown Museum in 1985. It preserves the original house, Studio A, Gordy’s former apartment, photographs, costumes, records, and other artifacts connected with the label’s artists. The museum is sometimes confused with Motown’s later Los Angeles operations, but the historic Hitsville building is firmly rooted in Detroit.

Detroit’s nickname “Motown” comes from “Motor Town,” reflecting the city’s automotive identity. Motown Records eventually moved its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1972, but the Detroit property remains the symbolic birthplace of the classic Motown sound.
