Which city is home to the first Canadian MLS team?

Toronto is home to the first Canadian MLS team, Toronto FC. The club joined Major League Soccer in 2007 as the league’s first Canadian franchise.

Toronto FC was created as an expansion team operated by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the company also associated with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors. The club’s arrival gave Canada a permanent presence in MLS and helped strengthen professional soccer’s profile in the country. Toronto played its home matches at BMO Field, located at Exhibition Place near Lake Ontario.

The wording can cause a small historical mix-up: Toronto FC was the first Canadian team in MLS, but not the first professional soccer club in Toronto or Canada. Toronto had earlier clubs in other leagues, including the Toronto Lynx. Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Montreal Impact later joined MLS, in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Toronto FC eventually won the MLS Cup in 2017, becoming the first Canadian club to claim the league championship.
