Dubai is home to the Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping malls by total area.
The mall forms part of Downtown Dubai, a major mixed-use development centered on Burj Khalifa. Emaar Properties developed the project, which opened in 2008. Its retail and entertainment spaces helped establish the district as a global destination for shopping, tourism, hospitality, and high-rise residential development.
The Dubai Mall contains hundreds of retail stores and attractions, including an aquarium and underwater zoo, an ice rink, a large cinema complex, and restaurants. Published rankings can differ because “largest mall” may mean total area, gross leasable area, or retail floor space. For that reason, the Dubai Mall is often described with a qualifying measure rather than as the uncontested largest by every definition.
Its location beside Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain illustrates how large-scale real-estate projects combine retail, leisure, transport, and public spaces into one urban district.
