Sydney’s location near the International Date Line means its midnight arrives early for many major world cities, helping make the display one of the first widely televised New Year celebrations of the year. The program commonly includes an earlier family fireworks show as well as the midnight display, although exact schedules can change.
The harbour bridge also has a central role beyond being a viewing backdrop: fireworks have been launched from it during the celebration. Sydney’s event is not the same as Australia’s national day, Australia Day, which occurs on January 26.
