Which city is divided by the Bosporus between Europe and Asia?

The story behind the answer

Istanbul is the city divided by the Bosporus between Europe and Asia.

The Turkish metropolis occupies both sides of the Bosporus, a strait connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Its European and Asian districts are linked by bridges, tunnels and ferries, making Istanbul one of the world’s most prominent transcontinental cities.

The city was known as Byzantium in antiquity and later as Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. It was officially renamed Istanbul in common international usage over time, with the modern republic adopting the name in the twentieth century.

Ankara is Turkey’s capital, but Istanbul is the country’s largest city and historic cultural centre. The Bosporus is not merely a city river: it is an international maritime passage and part of the boundary commonly used between Europe and Asia.
