Edinburgh hosts the event widely promoted as the world's largest New Year's Eve street party.
The Edinburgh Hogmanay celebration developed into a major multi-day festival featuring concerts, street entertainment, fireworks, and a large gathering along the city center's streets. Its best-known public event is the Street Party on December 31, where ticketed crowds gather for the countdown.
Modern Edinburgh Hogmanay is a commercial and civic festival, but it draws on Scotland's older Hogmanay traditions. A torchlight procession, concerts, and events on January 1 and 2 have also formed part of different editions of the program.
The phrase “world's largest” is promotional language used by event organizers and tourism sources, and crowd capacity can change between editions. Edinburgh is nevertheless the city most specifically associated with that description, rather than Scotland's entire Hogmanay tradition being confined to the capital.
