Vienna hosts the Vienna Philharmonic's globally broadcast New Year's Concert.
The concert is performed in the Musikverein's Golden Hall and is especially famous for waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family. Its formal title in English is the Vienna New Year's Concert, and the event is presented on New Year's Day rather than New Year's Eve.
The first concert in the modern tradition took place in 1939, conducted by Clemens Krauss. After the Second World War, the program developed into an annual international broadcast and became a major cultural symbol of Vienna.
The best-known recurring pieces include Johann Strauss II's “The Blue Danube” and the “Radetzky March.” The program changes from year to year, and a different conductor may lead the orchestra, but the city and venue remain central to the event's identity.
