Edinburgh hosts the traditional Hogmanay celebration centered on Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle.
Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Edinburgh’s modern festival developed into a large organized event featuring concerts, torchlight processions, street parties, and fireworks. The setting beneath Edinburgh Castle gives the celebration a distinctive skyline and helps make it one of the world’s most recognizable New Year events.
The festival’s name refers broadly to the Scottish New Year customs rather than to one single show. A major tradition associated with Hogmanay is first-footing: the first person to enter a household after midnight is traditionally expected to bring luck, with gifts such as whisky, shortbread, or coal appearing in older accounts.
Edinburgh’s official events have changed over time because of weather, crowd management, and public-safety decisions. The city, however, remains the internationally recognized location of this particular Princes Street and castle celebration. Glasgow and other Scottish cities also hold Hogmanay events, but they are separate festivals.
