Dubai hosts the New Year's Eve fireworks traditionally launched from the Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper stands in Downtown Dubai and has served as the centerpiece of large televised countdown displays featuring fireworks, lighting, and projection effects.
The Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building, reaching 828 metres including its spire. Its height and position beside the Dubai Mall and artificial lake make it a highly visible focal point for crowds and broadcasts. The New Year program can include coordinated effects on the tower as well as fireworks from nearby locations.
The building was officially inaugurated on January 4, 2010, after opening to the public in the same year. It was renamed Burj Khalifa in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the inauguration ceremony.
Dubai's celebration is sometimes confused with Abu Dhabi's national-day or New Year events, but the tower-based countdown specifically belongs to Dubai. Individual display formats can change from year to year.
