London hosts the New Year’s Eve fireworks launched from the London Eye.
The annual display takes place around the River Thames, with fireworks fired from the London Eye, nearby barges, and other locations along the river. The event is centered on the midnight transition into the New Year and is watched by large live crowds as well as television audiences. The London Eye, a giant observation wheel on the South Bank, provides a distinctive visual anchor.
London’s modern organized fireworks tradition grew substantially in the early twenty-first century. The display is staged by the Greater London Authority and has become one of the United Kingdom’s most recognizable New Year broadcasts. It is sometimes confused with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations, which are also famous, but the London Eye fireworks belong specifically to London’s Thames-side event.
