The Hague hosts the Netherlands' national New Year's Eve fireworks over the Hofvijver.
The Hofvijver is a lake in the historic center of The Hague, beside the Binnenhof complex and near the Mauritshuis museum. Its central location makes it a prominent setting for public celebrations, including the Dutch national New Year's Eve fireworks broadcast from the city.
The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and constitutional monarchy, although Amsterdam is the Netherlands' official capital. That constitutional distinction is a frequent source of confusion when identifying major national ceremonies and city-based celebrations.
The fireworks should also not be confused with the New Year's Dive, a separate Dutch tradition in which participants enter cold water on 1 January. The best-known organized dive takes place at Scheveningen, a seaside district of The Hague, while the Hofvijver event is a central-city fireworks celebration.
