Edinburgh hosts the Hogmanay torchlight procession that traditionally helps open its major New Year's festival.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a multi-day celebration featuring a torchlight procession, concerts, street parties, and fireworks. The procession usually takes place before December 31 and leads participants through the city toward a major public gathering, linking the festival to Scotland's fire and winter traditions.
The modern event grew into a large organized festival during the late twentieth century. Its historic cityscape, including the area around Edinburgh Castle, provides a distinctive setting for concerts and fireworks watched by residents and visitors.
Other Scottish cities hold their own Hogmanay events, so Edinburgh is not the only place where the holiday is celebrated. It is, however, the city most strongly associated internationally with the large-scale torchlight procession and festival branded as Edinburgh's Hogmanay.
