Edinburgh hosts the Hogmanay event known as the Torchlight Procession.
The procession is part of Edinburgh's major Hogmanay program and traditionally features thousands of participants carrying torches through the city. It culminates in a large gathering, historically associated with Calton Hill and, in some editions, Holyrood Park. The exact route and arrangements can change from year to year.
Torchlight processions are a visible part of Scotland's winter celebrations and connect modern public entertainment with older fire and light customs. Edinburgh's event helps launch several days of New Year programming, which can include concerts, street celebrations, and a traditional ceilidh.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay should not be confused with Up Helly Aa, a separate fire festival held in Lerwick in Shetland, usually in January. Nor is the Torchlight Procession the same thing as the New Year's Eve fireworks: it is a moving pre-celebration involving people and hand-held flames.
