Edinburgh hosts Edinburgh’s Hogmanay street party, one of Scotland’s best-known New Year celebrations.
Hogmanay is the Scottish word for New Year’s Eve and also describes the wider Scottish New Year season. Edinburgh’s modern festival developed into a large organized event featuring concerts, a torchlight procession, street festivities, and a midnight fireworks display.
The celebration is centered around central Edinburgh, with major activity on Princes Street and nearby areas. The city’s historic skyline, including Edinburgh Castle, is an important part of the festival’s visual identity, especially during fireworks displays.
Hogmanay traditions also include first-footing, in which the first person to enter a home after midnight is believed to influence the household’s luck. Edinburgh’s event is distinct from other Scottish gatherings, including Glasgow’s former Hogmanay celebrations.
