Edinburgh hosts the Hogmanay street party known for its major New Year’s Eve celebration.
Hogmanay is the Scottish word for New Year’s Eve and also refers to Scotland’s wider New Year customs. Edinburgh’s modern festival developed into a large organized event featuring concerts, torchlight processions, fireworks, and a city-center street party. Princes Street and nearby central areas have commonly formed the focus of the celebrations.
The festival combines modern entertainment with older traditions. “First-footing” is the custom of being the first visitor to enter a home after midnight, traditionally bringing gifts such as coal, shortbread, or whisky. In some traditions, a tall, dark-haired first-footer was considered especially lucky.
Edinburgh’s event has not taken place in exactly the same form every year. Weather, safety concerns, public-health restrictions, and event planning can change the program. Hogmanay itself, however, remains a major part of Scotland’s New Year identity.
