Pasadena hosts the annual Rose Parade on New Year's Day in California.
The Tournament of Roses Parade, commonly called the Rose Parade, takes place in Pasadena, near Los Angeles. Its first event was held on January 1, 1890, organized by the Pasadena Valley Hunt Club. Members wanted to showcase Southern California's mild winter climate with flowers, horse-drawn carriages, and outdoor festivities.
The parade is famous for floats covered with natural materials such as flower petals, seeds, bark, leaves, and other plant matter. Marching bands and equestrian groups are also central features. The Rose Parade is followed by the Rose Bowl college football game, although the parade and game are separate events.
The parade is usually held on January 1, but when January 1 falls on a Sunday, it moves to Monday, January 2. This scheduling rule prevents the parade from conflicting with Sunday church services and keeps the Rose Bowl tradition on its usual timetable.
