Atlanta hosts the annual New Year's Eve “Peach Drop,” one of the largest midnight-drop events in the United States.
The Atlanta Peach Drop began in 1989 and takes its name from the oversized peach lowered at midnight. The symbol refers to Georgia's long-standing association with peach production and its nickname, the “Peach State.” The event includes live entertainment and a countdown, making it a regional counterpart to New York City's Times Square Ball Drop.
Over time, the celebration has moved among downtown venues, including Underground Atlanta and other central locations. Some years have been altered or canceled because of weather, construction, security planning or public-health considerations. Consequently, descriptions of the event may mention different sites while still referring to the same Atlanta tradition.
The Peach Drop demonstrates a common pattern in New Year's celebrations: a city adopts a recognizable countdown object and gives it a local meaning. Atlanta's choice of a peach distinguishes its event from ball drops elsewhere.
