Edinburgh hosts the annual Hogmanay street party on Princes Street, one of Scotland’s largest New Year celebrations.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is a multi-day event that can include a torchlight procession, concerts, a large street party, and midnight fireworks. Princes Street, in the city centre, provides a famous setting with views toward Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town. Event formats, routes, and capacity arrangements can change from year to year.
The word Hogmanay refers broadly to Scottish New Year celebrations rather than to only one Edinburgh event. Scotland’s traditions also include first-footing, singing, fire rituals, and gatherings with family and friends. Edinburgh’s organized festivities developed into a major international event during the late twentieth century.
The city’s celebrations should not be confused with the Stonehaven Fireballs, a separate Scottish New Year event held farther north. Nor should Hogmanay be treated as the name of the Princes Street party alone: it covers a wider cultural celebration.
