Edinburgh hosts the annual Hogmanay fireworks beside Edinburgh Castle.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is one of Scotland’s best-known New Year celebrations. Its central events take place around the city center, with the castle providing a dramatic backdrop for the midnight fireworks. The program has also included concerts, street parties, and a torchlight procession.
The celebration grew into a major organized festival during the late twentieth century, helping establish Edinburgh as an international destination for New Year tourism. Different years have used different layouts, ticketing arrangements, and safety plans, so the precise event format can change.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is related to Scotland’s wider New Year traditions but is not the same thing as Burns Night, the January celebration of Robert Burns. Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee also hold New Year events, but Edinburgh is the city specifically associated with the castle-side Hogmanay spectacle.
