Edinburgh hosts the annual Hogmanay celebrations centered on Princes Street and surrounding venues.
Hogmanay is the Scots word for New Year's Eve and, by extension, the Scottish New Year festival. Edinburgh's modern celebration developed into a large organized event featuring concerts, street parties, a torchlight procession, and a midnight fireworks display beneath Edinburgh Castle.
Princes Street provides a dramatic setting because the Old Town and castle rise immediately to the south. The city's hills and historic skyline help make the fireworks visible across much of central Edinburgh, although exact event arrangements can change from year to year.
Scottish New Year customs also include first-footing, in which the first person to enter a household after midnight is traditionally expected to bring symbolic gifts such as coal, shortbread, or whisky. Hogmanay is therefore broader than one street party: it combines public festivities with household traditions found across Scotland.
